The Mellotron app stands as the official representation of the classic instrument, featuring sounds sourced from the original library. It includes six distinct sounds; for a more expansive experience, users may consider the Mellotron XL app, which offers 18 sounds along with emulations of various Mellotron and Chamberlin models. The XL version presents unique Chamberlin sounds, a broader range of Mellotron rhythms, and fills derived from the MkII Mellotron, as well as an integrated reverb unit.
This application supports Core MIDI, Audiobus output (compatible with Audiobus 2 & 3), and MIDI input (available only for Audiobus 3).
The Mellotron itself is a vintage keyboard instrument that utilizes magnetic tape to reproduce recordings, whereby each key is linked to a specific tape. Upon pressing a key, the associated tape activates, playing back the corresponding pre-recorded note or sound, while releasing the key quickly rewinds the tape to its starting position.
Originally invented in 1950 by American Harry Chamberlin, the instrument gained notoriety in the UK under the name "Mellotron," a term derived from merging "melody" and "electronics." Prior to the advent of digital samplers, it represented one of the sole methods by which keyboardists could emulate authentic instrument sounds—such as strings, flutes, and percussion—from a single keyboard interface.
While familiarity with Mellotrons and Chamberlins may be limited among the general public, their distinctive sounds have permeated popular music. Notable tracks featuring these instruments include The Beatles' "Strawberry Fields Forever" (flute), The Moody Blues' "Nights in White Satin" (three violins), Oasis' "Wonderwall" (cello), Radiohead's "Exit Music for a Film" (choir), and Lana Del Rey's "Ride" (Chamberlin flute).
Since 1989, the team at Mellotron has been dedicated to collecting, preserving, and enhancing these instruments. They have been manufacturing tape Mellotrons since 1999, producing models MkVI and MkVII.
